Washington, DC — An expected 150 students committed to improving race relations on their campuses nationwide will convene to exchange ideas, experiences and receive leadership training at the 3rd annual Sustained Dialogue Campus Network Conference. SDCN supports students in their efforts to improve race relations and implement Sustained Dialogue. This process brings a deeper level of communication between individuals or groups in conflict.
Princeton University, the birthplace of Sustained Dialogue on the campus level, will host the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network Conference on April 7-9, 2006. Students involved and interested in Sustained Dialogue will attend the two-day conference in order to strengthen the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network and their individual programs. Students will participate in workshops, receive moderator training, network with other SD students and alumni, and participate in mock dialogues conducted by Sustained Dialogue leaders.
Sustained Dialogue is a process that addresses strained relationships through consistent inter-group dialogue. The discussion groups are composed of 8-12 participants reflective of the community diversity and 2 trained student moderators. Here they come together on a regular basis, not simply to talk at each other, but to gain communal understandings and build relationships.
Norm Jones, Administrator at Dickinson College said, "Sustained Dialogue brings with it a kind of flavor that draws individuals (that wouldn't normally include themselves in conversations about difference) to the table; it can clearly be credited with building a stronger sense of community…changing the way people view themselves and others."
SDCN unites and supports students from over a dozen colleges and high schools across the nation. The University of Virginia, University of Notre Dame, Princeton University, and Colorado College conference attendees have all received leadership and organizational awards for their efforts to change campus culture through Sustained Dialogue. SDCN is a project of the International Institute for Sustained Dialogue (IISD) founded by former Assistant Secretary of State Dr. Harold Saunders.
