DECEMBER UPDATES
This month Clark and Tessa took a break from traveling and spent some quality time at the SDCN Headquarters. After the launch of the new SDCN Website, they commenced the planning of the upcoming Train-the-Trainer workshop in January, selected a new Program Director to work alongside Tessa starting this summer, and entertained a few surprise visits in the office. Read on to see what’s in store for January.

An Official Addition to the SD Family
We would like to announce a warm welcome to Christina Kelleher, the new SDCN Program Director for 2006-2008! Christina has been deeply committed to Sustained Dialogue since her first involvement as a participant at the University of Virginia. She has since become an experienced moderator, Vice Chair of the SD UVa program, and a summer intern at IISD. We are excited for her to join us at SDCN in June!

Emerging Possibilities
Conversations have started with four new schools interested in the possibility of starting an SD program. They include:
Cabrini College – Radnor, PA
University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa, AL
Emory University – Atlanta, GA
Charlottesville High School – Charlottesville, VA
As a true network, students, faculty, and administrators from these institutions became intrigued with Sustained Dialogue through their personal relationships with SD alumni from current programs in the Campus Network. Dialogue not only travels far and wide, but also lasts beyond campus borders!
Season’s Greetings in DC
We entertained quite a few visits from some old and new faces. First, David Tukey, Princeton SD co-founder, arrived from New York to attend the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and invited Tessa to attend the opening remarks by the Dalai Lama.
David’s co-founder, Teddy Nemeroff, flew in for the holidays from South Africa where he conducts several Sustained Dialogue programs. He joined us for our office holiday lunch and imparted some valuable leadership and presentation tips with Clark and Tessa in preparation for the upcoming Train-the-Trainer’s workshop.
Amanda Taylor, a PhD candidate from Harvard and UVA alum visited us for the first time in hopes to learn more about SD. Amanda is currently enrolled in a course called “American dilemmas: Everyday Antiracism.” Since she claims DC as her home, Amanda conveniently sought our insight and resources to help develop her final project, which focuses on combating racism in education.
Finally, Elizabeth Rothschild, an alum from the University of Virginia and former SD moderator, graced us with her presence, also a native of DC. She is the National Organizer of the Young Democratic Socialists in New York City and has recently invited Clark and Tessa to present at their upcoming national conference in February, entitled “Turning the Tide towards Freedom: Building the Youth and Student Movement for Justice.”

School: Dickinson
Year: 2007 Major: Neuroscience, with a Pre-Health focus "Sustained Dialogue has challenged me to step out of the boundaries set by my own surface assumptions about other people. I have become comfortable talking about issues of race, gender, religion, and the relationships that are encompassed by these issues. Without Sustained Dialogue it would have taken me many more years to arrive where I am today. It has been an amazing experience, and has only fueled my determination in creating an environment where issues can be discussed at the dinner table rather than swept under the rug."
