PROFILES OF SDCN'S PROGRAM DIRECTORS

  Jessica Munitz

Jess graduated from Princeton in 2003 as a Religion major. The "ReachOut 56 Fellowship" (awarded to Jess by the Princeton's Class of 1956 to allow graduating seniors to work for public interest organizations without the funding to hire them) enabled Jess to work on a full-time basis with IISD in order to institutionalize support for students and administrators to initiate, moderate, and maintain Sustained Dialogue programs. As the first Program Director for SDCN Jess oversaw the first SDCN Internship, created the first SD Moderator Manuals, coordinated the first National SDCN Intercollegiate Conference at Dickinson College, and established SDCN's name as a pioneer in the field of campus dialogue projects. Working largely on her own and without the benefit of predecessor, Jess achieved an incredible feat in establishing SDCN as a viable project of a young non-profit. Moreover, while serving as PD, she completed graduate coursework in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. Since her year at IISD, Jess has completed a post-baccalaureate program in Classical Languages at the University of Pennsylvania, earned an MA in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University, and is currently working on a PhD in Applied Anthropology at Columbia, where she hopes to focus her research on American higher education.  Jess credits her experience as Program Director with helping her focus her interests in the role that institutions of higher education play in teaching values of intellectual and cultural diversity, democracy, conflict management.

 Priya  Narayan Parker

Co-founder of SD at UVA, Priya Parker graduated in 2004 with a major in Political and Social Thought served as Program Director for SDCN from 2004-2005. Under Priya's management, SDCN held its second annual Intercollegiate Conference and third internship program, refined and delivered Moderator Training to more schools, won a grant from the Kellogg Foundation to develop its technological capacity, and began presenting its work at national conferences. In October 2005, Priya moved to New Delhi, India to work with a peace-building NGO called 'Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace' (WISCOMP) as a Sustained Dialogue consultant and trainer (see www.wiscomp.org/sd for the SD work in India). As a trainer, Priya conducts SD workshops and trainings for citizen groups from Pakistan, Nepal, Kashmir, Gujarat and Delhi. Priya has recently also joined a research institute in Delhi called PRS Legislative Research to learn more about "democracy from the top down," and is working on legislation and bills going through Indian Parliament.  She plans to apply for graduate school focusing on public policy and international relations.  She says that her experience as PD for SDCN was "the best job she could imagine coming straight out of college- I loved working with students, being part of a growing network, having the opportunity to travel and also to work so closely with Hal Saunders.  That one year taught me more than I could imagine about SD, conflict resolution, management, and NGOs, as well as helped me reach the next level—taking this stuff internationally!"

  Clark Herndon

Clark has been involved with Sustained Dialogue since his second year at the University of Virginia.  Clark participated in a group, was a moderator, and eventually became the chair of UVA's SD program. UVA's program grew to have over 250 members and 17 groups during his final year at the University, and boasted numerous accolades and accomplishments.  Clark graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia, before joining the SD Campus Network in June of 2005 as SDCN's third Program Director. Working alongside Associate Program Director Tessa Garcia, Clark managed an expanded SDCN and implemented increased follow-up with students engaged in SD moderating and leadership tasks. After leaving SDCN in 2006, he took a position at Bain and Company as an associate consultant. The worlds of management strategy consulting and non-profit dialogue-initiating seem pretty distant, but according to Clark, "The year I had working as an SD program director was invaluable to me. Trying to manage a large and growing network, interacting with so many interesting students who taught me so many different things, and enjoying the experience of working with such incredibly talented people really shaped the way I view my responsibilities now. I know that I'll continue to use the things I learned at SD on a daily basis as I interact with my colleagues and clients in what is-as many if not most jobs are-an industry and a life where relationships are so important."

  Tessa Garcia

Tessa encountered SDCN while on a quest to improve campus race relations through a research grant at the University of Notre Dame. Since her role as founder and executive chair of Sustained Dialogue at Notre Dame, Tessa also interned for the SDCN Summer Internship Program before assuming her role as the first Associate Program Director.   During her internship, she co-designed the SDCN logo and helped to develop the first SDCN website.  As Associate Program Director, she co-coordinated the 3rd Annual SDCN National Conference, oversaw the adaptation of the SDCN Leadership Manual and Moderator Resource Handbook, and completed the Dialogue, Deliberation and Public Engagement Certificate Program for scholar-practitioners at Fielding Graduate University.  She also received training at the Summer Peace-building Institute at Eastern Mennonite University. As Program Director the following year, Tessa oversaw the 2006 Summer Internship Program and managed SDCN as it offered its services to a greatly expanded network, composed of SD programs at 18 schools (up from the previous year's 9). Tessa is currently in her 2nd year at SDCN and will have presented SD at seven national conferences and one international corporation by June 2007.  She is a graduate from the University of Notre Dame and holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a minor in Public Relations from St. Mary's College.

 Christina Kelleher

Christina graduated from UVA in May 2006 as an English and American Studies double major. At UVa, Christina participated and moderated in SD, while serving on its Executive Board as Events Chair and ultimately as Vice-Chair. Christina served as an Intern at SDCN in 2005, during which time she gained an appreciation for the complex tasks involved in the development of SD to deal with racial tensions on college campuses. Christina was also involved in Alternative Spring Break at UVa, which relates to her love for travel and her interest in community work. She joined SDCN as an Associate Program Director in July. In her first 5 months working fulltime at SDCN, Christina "has learned an incredible amount about conflict management, diversity on college campuses, non-profit management, and public-speaking", against the backdrops of Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Charlottesville, VA; Atlanta, GA; Carlisle, PA; Princeton, NJ; Tuscaloosa, AL; Colorado Springs, CO; Philadelphia, PA; and Honolulu, HI, where she and Tessa have traveled for Moderator Trainings and conferences. Christina sights her tenure at SDCN as having involved "incredible learning, exciting responsibility, and work with amazing individuals". Christina remains unsure of her career aspirations, but notes that her work at SDCN provides a great starting point from which to consider non-profit/business management, law, or future education in psychology or conflict resolution.

"Sustained Dialogue has challenged me to step out of the boundaries set by my own surface assumptions about other people. I have become comfortable talking about issues of race, gender, religion, and the relationships that are encompassed by these issues. Without Sustained Dialogue it would have taken me many more years to arrive where I am today. It has been an amazing experience, and has only fueled my determination in creating an environment where issues can be discussed at the dinner table rather than swept under the rug."
