(Sustained Dialogue Campus Network) On June 8th, the Sustained
Dialogue Campus Network had the pleasure of
having Rajmohan Gandhi, President of Initiative
of Change International and grandson of Mahatma
Gandhi, visit the SDCN office in Washington,
DC. The SDCN staff, Mr. Gandhi and his wife,
and various members from Initiatives of Change
International met for an information session on
Mr. Gandhi’s work with the Initiative of
Change, which promotes peace, conflict
prevention, and intercultural dialogue, goals
shared by SDCN. Gandhi was also eager to hear
an update on SDCN’s work, which he became
familiar with after meeting Hal Saunders
several years ago.
Gandhi shared stories
about his relationship with his grandfather,
and stressed the importance of intercultural
dialogue. He also provided an international
perspective of the use of dialogue in conflict
resolution situations, and encouraged SDCN’s
work on training young leaders across the
country and exposing campuses to dialogue, as
dialogue is a key method to achieving positive
change and creating safe spaces in the
world.
Gandhi has been on a global
“Voyage of Dialogue and Discovery”,
traveling to countries such as Indonesia, South
Africa, Ukraine, Mexico, and the US. The
focus has been on discussing with
audiences several key questions, such as
“In an era of global competition, how might
we contribute to a climate of
cooperation?” More information can be
found at http://www.iofc.org/gandhi-tour.
“It
was an amazing experience to meet Mr.
Gandhi,” said Anu Mohan, a summer intern.
“Hearing stories about his grandfather and
the experiences he’s had that have led him to
a life working for peace was a very inspiring
start to my summer at SDCN.”
