Constitution

Maintaining a Constitution

If you choose to apply SD for official status as a student organization, your school may request a written constitution. Several campuses have already developed their own, so feel free to read these samples and adapt a version to fit the structure of your school.

If your school already has a constitution, make sure it remains up-to-date. With each new leadership group, the constitution should be carefully read and reviewed, and changes should be made to fit the groups' changing identity.

At UVA, for example, a procedure had to be written into the constitution explaining how the executive board would handle pilot programs and co-sponsoring events.

Read the samples below to get an idea of what a constitution looks like!

"Sustained Dialogue has challenged me to step out of the boundaries set by my own surface assumptions about other people. I have become comfortable talking about issues of race, gender, religion, and the relationships that are encompassed by these issues. Without Sustained Dialogue it would have taken me many more years to arrive where I am today. It has been an amazing experience, and has only fueled my determination in creating an environment where issues can be discussed at the dinner table rather than swept under the rug."
